Tucson Arizona has always been known for ideal winter weather and has been a chosen destination for frozen snowbirds (winter visitors) for decades. Summer weather in Tucson is likened to something somewhere between Purgatory and Hades; it is very, very hot. There are many beautiful places to take a day trip from Tucson but for a relief from the hammering summer heat, nothing can compare with a journey to Mount Lemmon. The Mount Lemmon highway takes you from the sizzling Sonoran desert to cool fragrant pine trees in an hour.
Many Tucson residents, having grown weary from the relentless heat, decide that a day trip up the mountain is their only respite so they turn down the air conditioners, set the alarm monitoring system, load the dog and kids and head for higher ground. In just a thirty-mile drive we can go from mesquite trees and Sahuaro cactus up through juniper and oak and into the cool Ponderosa pines.
The small mountain lake in Rose Canyon is often stocked with trout and is a very cool place to wet some lines. Further up the mountain and near the summit is the small community of Summerhaven that offers restaurants, gift shops and access to several scenic hiking trails. Ski valley is open year around and the kids love a summer ride on the resort's ski lifts.
