Some of the best fishing in all of Australia can be found in the Darwin region. Fishing from a boat offers the best sport, particularly when you have a guide who is well learned with regards to the area. There are reefs, billabong, rivers and coastal waters that all offer fabulous opportunities for fishermen. The top fishing spots in Darwin are:
1 Darwin Wharf
The wharf offers much more than fishing, although that is the primary draw for many people visiting the area. Pull up a car, grab your gear and sit on the wharf for some great fishing. When you’re through fishing, visit one of the shops or restaurants lining the wharf or just sit back and watch the boats in the harbour.
2 Elizabeth River Bridge
When the tide is low, fishing is optimal at the bridge just over the rocks, closest to the city. You’ll also have a wonderful view of the Darwin Harbour while sitting on the footpath casting your line.
3 East Point Rocks
Fishing here can only be done with rod and reel or handline as it is a marine sanctuary. Any fish caught that measure less than 30cm must be thrown back into the water and corals, crabs, shells and sea urchins are protected.
4 Rapid Creek
Low tide at dusk is perhaps the prime fishing time at Rapid Creek. Head to the first bend in the river, close to the yellow bridge and go to the sand bar. This is the best fishing area of the entire creek. If you don’t have access to a boat, Rapid Creek offers the greatest off-bank fishing in Darwin.
5 Nightcliff Boat Ramp and Jetty
Saturdays are perhaps the busiest day of the week at this popular fishing spot. Food caravans are plentiful, offering take-aways for all those sitting back, watching the sun or enjoying the playgrounds and parks.
