Kilkenny - A calm experience
June 2nd 2008 14:32
Simplicity is one way to describe the town of Kilkenny. The enviroment holds you in a state of balance and stability whilst also engaging you in a sense of comfort. This little town offers alot more than you would realise at first glance.
Kilkenny Castle is inspiring to visit, you recieve a comprehensive 45min tour that comes with a history of the castle you would never expect. Its partial restoration has taken many years and quite a spactacular one at that. From replicated furniture, wall paper, rugs to original pictures located across the shores in America have been sought after and re established so that you really do feel like your back in the days of when the castle was in its peak condition. You would also never expect to find that within the family history there is a distant relation to President Bush, though they do ask that you don't hold that against them.
After visiting inside the castle take yourself to the plentiful acerage that surrounds this amazing site. WIth the vastness of land, you will find even locals enjoying a day of relaxation and picnic lunches, while others jog the grounds. Find yourself getting lost in nature as there is a definate energy that almost makes you feel as though your surrounded by fairies.
The cobblestone pavements and walkways within the town - even with the modern touches to businesses - still enables one to be transformed into the past, giving the feeling of ireland one would imagine to visit in the 21st century. You could almost hear the sound of horses clopping through the streets, the traditional music being playing from every corner and the laughs sounding from every door that is open to welcome you in with open arms.
Getting to Kilkenny from Dublin is quite easy costing only 11 euros one way and with a quick 1 and 1/2 hour bus ride that shows you spactacular views of the country land in Ireland. There are two stops which you can get off at once your at Kilkenny - one at the train station and one in the heart of the town centre only minutes away from the information centre who are fantastic i must say.
The information centre can give you great advice on seeing some of the other amazing sites to visit whilst your in town. Dunmore Caves, Jerpoint Abbey and St Canice Catheddral to name a few, i might add just here that the catheddral is beautiful from every angle. I would suggest an early morning jog to percieve an essence of beauty you will keep with you forever. If you enjoy the more physical activities head to the Tynan walking tours and discover Kilkenny away from the town centre.
All in all a very calming town - but that isn't to say it doesnt get its fair share of festivals The Rythem and Roots festival is held there every year, hosting an array of eclectic bands spread throughout the many pubs this town has to offer. Some are free of charge and others a small entry fee, but all worth it for the experience is electric and will have you buzzing from your memories for many years or until the next year - as i am sure once you have been you will be compelled to visit not just the festival but this great town of Kilkenny.
What are you waiting for?
