Madrid, A Great Vacation Destination

When one thinks of the beautiful places to visit in Spain, Madrid always comes to mind. Madrid is the largest city and the capital of Spain. If you are a first time tourist, you will surely have a blast with Madrid's many beautiful tourist attractions. Millions of tourists visit this city yearly because of it's very beautiful architecture, historic museums, wonderful sights and many more. It is important to note the schedule of the many fiestas in this country. Some shops and offices are closed on these days but there are also very enjoyable and religious celebrations.
Some of the fiestas in Madrid include the Dos de Mayo (2nd of May), San Isidro, La Paloma and La Almudena. These celebrations take place between the months of April and October. In these days, many establishments like shops and museums, offices and banks are closed in respect to the patron saints and to give the people a chance to join the celebration. The 1st of May is also being celebrated as a national holiday. San Isidro is the male patron saint of the capital city. The feast of San Isidro takes place every 15th of May with different popular activities like the verbenas (fairs), bullfights and the romerias or local festive pilgrimages.
Aside from it's fiestas, one can also enjoy shopping at the heart of Madrid at La Puerta del Sol. You can find different establishments, galleries and shopping stores in this area. At the center of the plaza is the El Oso y El Madroņo or the the Bear and the Madroņo Tree which is the symbol of Madrid. The Real Casa de Correos can also be found at the square containing the famous clock tower.

The Plaza Mayor lies to the Southwest of Puerta del Sol. The Casa de la Panaderia can be found here which is usually used as a venue for the many celebrations and cultural activities. The Royal Palace of Madrid which is the official residence of the Royal Family is also a must see attraction.

The city of Madrid also houses classy and historical museums. The Museo El Prado houses a fine collection of European art. This museum is also known as the Museum of Painting and Sculptures. The National Museum of Spain which is officially known as the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía houses a collection or works of various Spanish artists. Other museums worthy of visit are the National Archaeological Museum of Spain, Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, Museum of the Americas and Museo Sorolla.
