Marseille is known to be the oldest city in the country. It is a great vacation destination for the whole family. This is a very historic city and has a rich cultural heritage. In Marseille, one can enjoy watching the crystalline blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea and enjoy the alluring view of the Frioul Islands which is a 200 hectares of rock and beach. It costs 5 euros to get there with little ferries that ply back and forth to the island. The trip is about 20 minutes. The islands are Pomegues, Ratonneau, Tiboulain and If. Tiboulain is the smallest of the four while Pomegues and Ratonneau are the bigger ones. The Chateau d' If or Castle of If can be found on the If island where the protagonist of the famous movie Count of Montecristo created by Alexander Dumas was jailed. One can also enjoy visiting the popular museums Musee de Beaux Arts and the Musee d’Histoire Marseille. There are also many galleries in the city if you want to visit more.
Marseille has a wide variety of cafes and restaurants that would satisfy your discriminating palate. The Phare de Sainte Marie is a lighthouse built to mark the harbor of Marseille, France. According to Wikipedia, this lighthouse stands 70 feet high and is made from naturally finished local limestonse. It was completed in 1855 but had been upgraded in 1922 to electrical illumination. This lighthouse is currently inactive but its magnificent attraction continues to impress tourists.
Other Marseille tourist attractions are The Old Port, La vieille charité, Cathedral of Sainte-Marie-Majeure and The Musée Cantini.
