Another reason that makes Venice one of the most visited places on earth is it's annual Carnival of Venice which starts around two weeks before Ash Wednesday. It then ends on Shrove Tuesday (Fat Tuesday or Mardi Gras), the day before Ash Wednesday. The Carnival is a celebration and expression throughout the classes. Those who join the festival wear masks to hide any form of identity between social classes. Every year, there is approximately 30,000 visitors per day who witness the carnival.
